From this week West Midlands Police will be providing a weekly crime round up for the Selly Oak area. This will capture what has been happening, provide advice and guidance to address any emerging issues, as well as flag events and items up which students may need to be aware of. This week:
Thanks to several calls received from students on Healey Road, officers were able to swoop and arrest seven teenagers on suspicion of robbery during Halloween (31 October).
Officers flooded the area and swooped on the group of masked teenagers in Healey Road at around 8pm. All seven were charged with conspiring to rob.
Power cut hits Selly Oak
A significant power cut occurred on the evening of 6 November in Selly Oak after an electricity sub-station fire.
Officers and wardens increased patrols to deter crime and assist the public during the power cut, while specialist teams attended the scene of the power cut to investigate.
Students were encouraged to stay home during the power cuts to ensure nobody took advantage of the situation and we are pleased to report that no crime occurred during the incident in the Selly Oak area of Birmingham.
There was a handbag snatch on Bournbrook Road in 7th November. The offender is described as being a white male in his twenties. He was wearing a white woolly hat and a blue jacket with white stripes. If you saw anybody matching this description acting suspiciously, we would urge you to call us on 101.
Officers in Selly Oak conducted an ‘All Out Day’ on 8th November alongside wardens, the Guild and other partners.
Officers visited several roads consisting predominantly of student accommodation and spoke to students about home security. The fire service also attended to share fire safety checks.
German market comes to town
We would like to remind students to keep bags, phones and wallets tucked away if attending the International German Market in the city centre from next Thursday.
The market is a fantastic area in which to meet up, have a few drinks and enjoy the atmosphere but we would like to stress the importance of keeping belongings safe.
Please never leave mobile phones, wallets or purses loose on table tops or bars (this happens all too often). Thank you.
